This is a mutant blue oyster I call the “Blue Puff This is a mutant blue oyster I call the “Blue Puffball”. A few years ago I tried an experiment where all the blue oysters we grew for a few weeks were from King Blue spores. I germinated spores in the center of a plate and isolated each sector of unique looking mycelium, and gave each their own little bag of grain spawn. I did about 30 bags of substrate this way, and each produced a unique shade of blue or grey oysters with varying cap and stem sizes. These were the most unique result of the trial. I initially thought they were contaminated with blotch, or it was an environmental cause. I cloned and grew them out 3 times before I was confident it was purely genetic. They have a delicious flavor and a very soft texture. I have cultures of this available on my Etsy shop.

Was lucky to visit @newmoonmycologysummit last Sun Was lucky to visit @newmoonmycologysummit last Sunday. I was at the farmers market only about a 10 minute drive away when my friend told me that it was happening. Needless to say I headed over as soon as I could, joined by @518asianeats and was able to catch @mycosymbiote s talk on making mushroom extracts. Also caught @yesfolk doing a talk on fruit shrubs and checked out the ID table. Next year I’ll definitely get there sooner!

Harvesting Peach Caps for tomorrow’s farmers marke Harvesting Peach Caps for tomorrow’s farmers market. They have a unique fruity, herbal flavor and aroma that lends well to dishes that would typically call for chanterelles. The taxonomic name is Rhodotus reticeps

Summer is the most challenging time for us, it’s t Summer is the most challenging time for us, it’s the most difficult weather to grow mushrooms, and there’s like 3x more demand compared to winter. Growing lots of mushrooms that are fighting us the whole way lol. Still been able to bring some pretty cool stuff to the markets each weekend. Peach caps, mock oysters, wild chestnuts to name a few. Each year we get a little better at growing them

Mock oysters growing much larger and faster after Mock oysters growing much larger and faster after only one generation of selective breeding.

Germinate spores ➡️ fruit the multi spore culture ➡️ clone your favorite one ➡️ fruit the clone ➡️ collect spores from your favorite one ➡️ repeat

This method is pretty easy and gives all sorts of cool results. To me it seems wild genetics show the fastest rate of change compared to commercial strains
